The boxed cross

Excavated artifact
This cross has surfaced from the excavation site near the waters in the south of Honmaru Main Enclosure palace. The bronze box-shaped crucifix measures at a little over seven centimeters in length, a little less than five centimeters in width, and just over a centimeter in depth. It weighs nearly 26 grams, which makes this one of the bigger findings of its kind. It features a ring at the top of the vertical shaft as well as protrusions at the both ends of the horizontal shaft. Japanese traditional design of intricate fish scale-like patters embellishes both sides of the cross along with drawings closely associated with the judgment of Jesus Christ; e.g., the stars, the crown of thorns, the claw hammer, the gavel, the nails, the spear, and so on. The flip side of it shows a drawing of grape vine. It is hollow inside, perhaps, for the purpose of holding various religious paraphernalia.
