Step remains

Architecture/Cultural Heritage/Excavated artifact
The remains of stairs (Stairways 2 and 3) found in excavations from 1996 to 1998 have different structures. Stepping stones of Stairway 3 were found on top of Stairway 2. They seem to have been built at different times, with Stairway 2 being older than Stairway 3.

For Stairway 4, the remains of which were found in 1998 and 1999, most of the stepping stones seem to have used stone from the foundations of a five-ringed pagoda or those of a Hokyoin-to pagoda. Panel-like cut stones are used for both edges of the stairs. Grooves were cut into the stones to allow for wall building, and there are similarities with castle ruins in Okinawa. Gilded tiles have been found at the corner of stair landings and the ruins of earthfast buildings have been uncovered in the field at the top of the stairs.

Stairway 3 also uses stone from some parts of stone towers, including the foundations of a five-ring pagoda and a Hokyoin-to pagoda. Stairways 3 and Stairway 4 are therefore considered to have been built in the same era.

When each stairway was unearthed, it was buried under the stones used in its construction. This was a similar situation to Hara Castle, which was destroyed after the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion.
