Since it was opened as a trading port in 1562 by the feudal lord Arima Yoshinao, Kuchinotsu Port has thrived as a center for Christian missionary work, for trade with Spain and Portugal, and other countries, and as a port of transit for exporting coal from the Miike Coal Mine during the Meiji era. The Kuchinotsu History & Folklore Museum has been relocated to the Kuchinotsu Port Terminal since it was reopened on March 20th, 2020.
