Matchlock gun bullets

Excavated artifact
This was used in a battle between the rebels and the shogunate army. Shells for cannon and lead or iron bullets of matchlocks have been found. In particular, various sizes of bullets of matchlocks have been found. These tell us that many kinds of matchlocks were used in the battle.

A record of the shogunate army describes how they prepared many firearms from other areas including Edo to suppress the rebellion. It further states that the rebels had matchlocks as well and there was fierce shooting. This means that a battle using firearms was also part of the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion.
