Gold cross

Excavated artifact
This was found in a field of ruins of the main area of Hara Castle in 1951. It is made of gold (22 carats) and is 4.8 cm high and 3.2 cm wide. It is an exquisite cross with detailed decoration made by twisting gold wires. The bottom is a cage-like spherical form that is considered to have been used as a container of sacred relics. One theory is that it is a cross that the Pope passed to the Tensho Keno Shisetsu mission as a gift to bring back to Harunobu Arima. This is mentioned in a record (a document of Christian history)about a welcome ceremony for the youths held at a church in Arima in 1590. Now the cross is owned by Gallery Namban in Osaka City (opened for a limited period only).
