Ruins of pit dwellings

Architecture/Cultural Heritage
These ruins are of the pit dwellings of the revolting troops during the siege that took place in the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. Each dwelling was around 2-3m on each side, and there were nine sections along the stone wall set up in a north-south direction. Although the siege had taken place during the winter, no traces of individual artifacts or structures related to heating and cooking (such as furnaces or cooking stoves) were found. This suggested that the siege was highly organized, and there was strict military discipline among the daimyo's troops to prevent the occurrence of accidental fires.
