This statue, close to 10 meters in height, is one of the worldʼ s largest carved wooden statue of the Mother Mary and was created by sculptor Eiji Oyamatsu over a period of 40 years as a tribute to the souls of those who died in the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion.
